WCW Monday Nitro 18/09/1995
We open up the show with Eric Bischoff, Bobby Hennan, Mongo and Pepe.
We head straight to the back to Mean Gene with an ambulance backing in the arena. Out jumps Kevin Sullivan and The Giant from the back of the Ambulance. Giant talks about wanting to destroy Hulkamania.
American Males vs. Harlem Heat
The American Males are Marcus Alexander Bagwell and Scotty Riggs.
The American Males are scheduled to take on the Blue Bloods but Harlem Heat attack Bobby Eaton before the match. Booker grabs the mic and says The Blue Bloods shouldn’t have been here tonight, because Harlem Heat are the tag team champs. Booker offers the American Males a tag title shot.
Shoving match to start between both teams which breaks out into a big brawl. Ray starts off with Riggs, Ray gets a kick to the midsection and chocks Riggs in the corner. Irish whip by Ray, Riggs reverses for a dropkick but it doesn’t faze Ray, Bagwell comes in and they take Ray down with a double dropkick. Riggs gets an arm wringer on Ray and tags in Bagwell who comes off the top rope down across Rays arm. Bagwell whips Ray into the ropes, Ray catches Bagwell with a sidewalk slam, and tags out to Booker. Booker grabs a headlock on Bagwell, Bagwell tries to fight out of it and Booker comes off with a shoulderblock followed by a big powerslam. Booker misses a leg drop and Bagwell tags out to Riggs, Ray knees Riggs from behind and Booker hits his axe kick. Ray gets tagged in and hits a clothesline on Riggs. Ray stomps away on Riggs and then chokes him on the mat. Ray tags out to Booker, who comes in with a big jumping side kick for 2. Booker with an irish whip and Riggs counters with a sunset flip, but Booker tags out to Ray. Ray hits a bodyslam and tags back out to Booker. Booker goes for a somersault leg drop, but Riggs manages to move out of the way. Riggs tags out to Bagwell who comes in like a house on fire, dropkick to both Ray and Booker. Col. Parker comes out from the back and takes Sherri to the back. Booker looks to hit a pump handle slam, but Bagwell falls on top of Booker for the pin fall and to win the WCW Tag Team Titles.
Match Thoughts: Decent tag team match, fast paced throughout. Not quite sure why Harlem Heat won the titles last night only to lose them tonight. *3/4
Mean Gene is in the ring and is set to interview Ric Flair. Flair says that Arn ‘broke the code’ by bringing Pillman into this. Flair said its ok to settle it in the family. Flair says he is going to chop Pillman so hard tonight, and then Flair is going to find Arn Anderson and kick his ass, brother!
Paul Orndorff vs. Johnny B. Badd
Orndorff attacks right at the bell, and hits a dropkick to Badds leg. He continues to assault Badd with kicks and gets him into the corner and chokes him. The ref has to pull Orndorff off of Badd. Orndorff tries to whip Badd but its reversed, Badd hits a hiptoss followed by a body slam, Badd up to top for an axe handle, Orndorff gets his legs up for a 2 count as we head to commercial.
Back from the break and both guys are on the mat. Badd gets up first and goes for a splash but Orndorff gets his legs up. Orndorff comes off the top rope for a splash but Badd rolls out of the way. Badd with a couple of rights knocks Orndorff to the outside. Badd slingshots to the outside on Orndorff, Badd rolls Orndorff back into the ring and comes off the top with an axe handle for 2. Orndorff tries to get Badd up for a piledriver, Badd is able to reverse it into a back drop, and follows up with two clotheslines. Badd goes for his own piledriver, but Orndorff reverses that into a backdrop, which Badd rolls through on for a sunset flip attempt, Badd isn’t able to get him over and Orndorff drops down to pick up the 3 count.
Match Thoughts: Nothing match. After Badd goes 30 minutes last night against Pillman he loses to Orndorff like that? 3/4*
We got to some clips of Macho Man lifting waits on the beach with the cast of Baywatch. Kevin Sullivan comes out of nowhere and attacks Macho Man and chokes him with the weights.
Mean Gene is in the ring with Macho Man, Gene wants to know what the story is with Flair after he saved him from Sullivan, Savage says thanks but no thanks. Gene wants to know what the story is with Sullivan attacking him. Macho says he will destroy Sullivan himself. Macho Man says he doesn’t know if Hogan is in hospital or if he is at home resting. Macho Man says that Hogan is a terrible judge of character after Luger clotheslined Savage in War Games. Savage says he is drawing a line in the sand, you’re either with him or you’re against him. Savage says that Sting, Luger and Jimmy Hart are the newest members of the Dungeon of Doom.
Out comes Lex Luger who says Macho Man is making some pretty strong statements. Luger wants to know if Savage is jealous of Luger. He wants to know if Savage wants to be the heavyweight champion. Savage says Luger makes a good point as he does want to be the champion.
We see clips from yesterday, when the Giant ran over Hulks Harley Davidson before Fall Brawl. When then get clips of Giant attacking Hogan at Fall Brawl.
Ric Flair vs. Brian Pillman
Lock up to start, and both guys end up in the corner. They trade chops in the corner, Pillman gets an eye rake on Flair. Pillman goes for a dropkick but Flair holds onto the ropes. Flair punches Pillman into the corner and then throws him to the outside. Flair goes to the top rope and comes off with an axe handle to the outside. Flair chops away at Pillman on the outside. Flair rolls Pillman back into the ring, Pillman catches Flair coming into the ring and drops him neck first across the top rope. Pillman with big chops, and irish whips Flair into the corner, Flair flips to the apron and Pillman goes for a clothesline which Flair ducks under and then hits his own. Flair comes off the top rope but gets met with a Pillman dropkick in mid air for 2.Pillman grabs Flairs arm which Arn Anderson injured last night, Pillman drags Flair outside and they exchange chops again. Flair picks Pillman up and drops him throat first across the guardrail. Flair catches Pillman on the apron and chops him, Pillman slingshots into a sunset flip but Flair grabs Pillman and punches him in the head. Pillman with an eye rake and whips Flair into the corner, Pillman charges Flair but gets taken down with a big boot, Flair goes up top but Pillman catches him and slams him down to the mat. Pillman comes off the top with a splash but Flair rolls out of the way. Flair goes for the figure four but Pillman catches him in a roll up for 2. Pillman off the ropes and both guys crash into each other. Flair up at 4, and they exchange chops. Flair picks Pillman up for a back suplex, Flair locks in the figure four and Pillman taps out.
Match Thoughts: Very good main event this week on Nitro. Good back and forth action, and this match shows that Flair can work with anyone. ***
Ric Flair grabs the mic and says to Arn Anderson if not tonight, then next week. He calls out Arn Anderson for next week on Nitro.
Matches announced for Nitro next week, Alex Wright against Disco Inferno, Col. Rob Parker will have Kurasawa there. Kevin Sullivan versus Macho Man and Lex Luger against Meng,
Show Thoughts: Only 3 matches this week, the main event was very good. This week does contain a historic moment with the first title change occurring. Apart from that not much else to see. Thumbs in the middle.
